As I hear the train whistling ...
Like many French departments, in the early 1900, our region was part of the development of the railway, called by the ancients "Les Tacots du Perigord" ...
Very helpful to reach the market of Piégut (still the largest in the area, to be visited on Wednesday morning), the old train from Saint Mathieu to Saint Pardoux la Riviere was inaugurated in 1912.

The geological pearl of the Périgord
Even when you have travelled through the Perigord many times in the past, and you think you know all its secrets, sometimes a new treasure can be discovered.
This is the case in Tourtoirac, where a new “grotte” has been open to the public since 2010.
In 1995 the cave has been discovered by a neighbour, Jean Luc Siriex. Unfortunately, during the second dive in the cave, accompanied by a friend, he drowned.

A unique architecture in the Périgord
The hughe castle of Hautefort stands on a plateau overlooking the valleys of the Beuze river and the Lourdes river.
In addition to its elegant facade, the castle has beautiful gardens “à la Française” and a rich collection of furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Château de Hautefort was built on a strategic site that once was a Roman camp.
Strategic, since from the heights of this position, the view over the whole region is covering many miles.

When speaking of apples, we immediately think of Normandy. But we should not forget the Limousin Apple (Pomme du Limousin is a protected name).
This apple is the queen of the village Lanouaille, surrounded by orchards and, of course, where the apple is an important point in the local economy. To pay tribute to the fruit, the municipality decided to dedicate a museum to it.

An original aperitif !
For several years, is Château le Verdoyer working with the “Distillerie du Centre”, in Limoges, owned by Ets Nouhaud.
This "old" distillery created in 1789 (the last of the 48 present in Limoges in 1900), still active, and distilling today in alembics from the 19th century as a challenge to time and modernization!
Among its star products, they created a drink on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the death of Richard the Lion Heart (it has indeed received the fatal arrow here in Chalus):

Do you know about Phyto -purification ?
This was the big winter 2014 project at Chateau le Verdoyer : it is an ecological wastewater treatment system using natural reeds as a filter.
Compared to conventional solutions this allows the soil the opportunity to cleanse the waste water - the water reed filters return clean water to the ground.
